Phase Separation
Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) is a biophysical process in which biomolecules spontaneously condense into a dense, dynamic, liquid-like phase within a surrounding dilute phase. By concentrating proteins and other molecules, LLPS can regulate cellular processes, but under certain conditions, these condensates may undergo structural changes, misfolding and aggregation, contributing to the formation of pathological amyloid structures. Thus, understanding and modulating LLPS is increasingly important for studying protein aggregation and disease mechanisms.
